Our Secret Tearoom in Wales

A Little Gem in Montgomery – Castle Kitchen

Montgomery is a beautiful, peaceful Welsh town nestled among the rolling hills of Montgomeryshire, and it’s somewhere that holds a special place in our hearts.

My husband is originally from Montgomery, so we visit regularly to catch up with family and friends. Whenever we can, we like to sneak away for an hour while the family keep everyone entertained and head to one of our favourite little places in town – Castle Kitchen.

It has become our little escape. Castle Kitchen is small, cosy and full of character, and I think its size is part of what makes it so charming. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and the staff are always so friendly and welcoming. Nothing ever seems too much trouble.

On our latest visit, I chose the Welsh Rarebit, made using locally brewed Monty Ale, and it was absolutely delicious. My husband went for a mature cheese and caramelised onion chutney sandwich, which was equally tasty.

Of course, we couldn’t leave without sampling some cake!

We shared a slice of the most delicious Apple and Cinnamon Cake, baked by one of the lovely ladies in the kitchen. It was packed with apples and had that gorgeous warm, autumnal flavour. I couldn’t help thinking it would also be amazing served warm with a generous helping of custard. Heaven!

Eventually, we had to leave our little haven, but not before having a browse through the lovely selection of locally produced goodies. Castle Kitchen sells jams, pickles, cakes and all sorts of tempting treats, making it a great place to pick up a little gift too.

We came away with a few presents for friends, including some Popty Cara Welsh Cakes… although we may have to hide those before anyone else finds them!

As much as part of me wants to keep Castle Kitchen a secret, it really is too lovely not to share. If you ever find yourself passing through Montgomery, make sure you pop in, enjoy something delicious and take a little time to soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

And after being given a rather large supply of apples recently, I think I know what I’ll be baking when I get home. I’m definitely going to attempt my own version of that gorgeous Apple and Cinnamon Cake in the IncrEdible Kitchen!
